Given the chance, women have consistently proven that they can keep pace with their hairy counterparts, especially in the poker world, where the shoulder’s chip becomes literal.
Last Sunday, June 6, Event #17, the $1,000 Ladies World Championship began, and a field of 1060 ladies paid to play for a chance at history. At the beginning of most poker tournaments, predictions are basically kept to one’s self. The field is an even split of people trying to hold on, and people trying to climb higher. Simply put, it’s anyone’s game.
However, these ladies all have one thing in common: gambling is second nature. As such, like with any poker game, an early favorite—i.e. massive chip leader—is bound to emerge. Before the whistle blew to end day one, Tamara Tibbles had taken a commanding chip lead over the entire field. With a stack of 129,000, her closest competition barely tipped the scaled at only 62,000.
So, it’s over, right? Tibbles is a shoo-in. Not so fast, buddy. We’ve all seen leads collapse like straw huts in a hurricane, and unless Tibbles can keep up on her impressive streak of hot cards and cold reads, she may become the event’s biggest story for all the wrong reasons.
Day two of the event saw Tibbles take a few hits, and though the pressure was relentless, Tamara gave new meaning to the phrase “bend but don’t break.” Tibbles, who for all intents in purposes is a fish in shark-infested waters, needs to dodge the likes of Evelyn Ng, Amanda Baker, Kristy Gazes, Karina Jett, and last year’s champion Svetlana Gromenkova if she hopes to adorn the bracelet.
With day three set to be played, Tibbles remains in prime position, with a stack high above the felt, and the sharpened instincts of Doyle Brunson on ginseng. Can she do it? Time will certainly tell the tale of the ladies’ $1,000. Whoever wins, it would be a great head of steam as the $10,000 Main Event draws ever closer.
